NWHM affirms the importance of an accurate and complete understanding of the past. The museum will use innovative and engaging means to communicate the breadth of women´s experiences and accomplishments to the widest possible audience to foster greater partnership between men and women.
The National Women's History Museum (NWHM) was organized to help mainstream Women's History into the culture. Our first organizing event was our successful campaign to move the Portrait Monument (statue given by the suffragists to the US Congress in 1920 to commemorate the passage of the 19th amendment) which had been stuck in the Crypt of the Capitol for 76 years. There had been at least 5 attempts to move it during that time. It actually took longer to move the Statue than to get the right to vote (72 years) that it commemorated!! While we continue to pursue a site on or near the National Mall we have developed a sophisticated CyberMuseum complete with an ever growing group of CyberExhibits which have been used as teaching tools worldwide. We believe the more women and men know about the full and real contributions that women have made in history that there well may be a positive ripple effect on women's rights and their well-being in general.
It is our hope that even the oppression of women will be changed for the better as the view of, and attitude towards, women is impacted by the shock of all the information that we did not know of women's roles in the past!
